Abstract

This presentation will showcase the design and experimental testing of a resilient, full-scale, two-storey Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) structure, which integrates resilient rocking walls and tension-bracing systems as the lateral load-resisting systems. The test series was recently concluded at the University of Auckland. Throughout the testing program, several concepts of lateral load transfer and damping mechanisms were evaluated across a variety of scenarios and phases, and the results will be presented. The objective of the testing, as demonstrated by the outcomes, is to showcase and investigate a resilient timber structure capable of going beyond life safety, delivering full functionality and immediate occupancy after an event. The structure also aims to serve as a sustainable and cost-effective solution, relevant to real-life applications.

Biographies

Dr Ashkan Hashemi is a Senior Lecturer in structural and earthquake engineering at the University of Auckland. He has more than a decade of working experience as an Intermediate, Senior and Principal structural engineer as well as Technical Director of Structural Engineering.

His research interests are Timber Structures and Connections, Functional Recovery, Low Damage Design, Seismic Resilience, Energy dissipation devices and innovative approaches to Earthquake Engineering. He is also keen on exploring transdisciplinary research that looks at Functional Recovery from different angles. Dr Hashemi’s research has been focused on innovation and practice-driven subjects. He was the recipient of the prestigious EQC/NZSEE Ivan Skinner award in 2021 recognizing his research to practice outcomes. He is currently a member of New Zealand Timber Design Society (TDS) committee, managing editor for the TDS journal and scholarship manager for the timber society. Dr Hashemi is also a Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng), Chartered Member of Engineering New Zealand (CMEngNZ) and registered as an International Professional Engineer (IntPE/APEC).

Other presenters: Setu Agarwal and Soheil Assadi (PhD candidates).
