Abstract

Global and national efforts to mitigate climate change and promote sustainability have encouraged the building construction industry to utilise timber and its products as primary construction material due to timber’s aesthetic, psychological and carbon sequestering qualities that add values to any built environment. The presentation will start with a simple overview of basic fire science and the “art” of building fire safety design, before delving into mass timber fire safety via the 2023 Timber Unlimited guidelines – Fire Safety in Multi-Storey Mass Timber Structures. The presentation will be supplemented by some project case studies to portray the current compliance pathways, design methodologies, and common challenges, and also to highlight the evolving knowledge base – from a Fire Engineer’s perspective.

Biography

Dennis is a Chartered Professional Engineer in fire safety engineering with great interest in mass timber fire safety and compartment fire dynamics. He began practising fire engineering in 2010s, with background in combustion of fuels and numerical fire modelling. As a fire consultant, Dennis has worked on various projects over the Christchurch Earthquake Rebuild period and is now working closely with leading timber, structural and fire experts at PTL.
