Abstract

This presentation explores advanced methods for the corrosion protection of reinforced concrete structures, focusing on two key strategies: cathodic protection using sacrificial zinc anodes, and the application of surface impregnators. The discussion will include both external and internal deployment of zinc anodes, highlighting their effectiveness in mitigating steel reinforcement corrosion through galvanic action. Emphasis is placed on design considerations, installation techniques, and long-term performance monitoring. Additionally, the presentation examines the role of hydrophobic impregnators — such as silanes and siloxanes — in reducing moisture and chloride ingress, thereby enhancing the durability of concrete. A design example will be included. By integrating electrochemical and barrier protection methods, the presentation aims to provide a comprehensive approach to extending the service life of reinforced concrete infrastructure.
