Abstract

The New Zealand Building Code Clause B1 Structure, requires engineers to consider all physical conditions likely to affect the stability of the building such as temperature and fire in section B1.3.3 (c) & (i) respectively. The current state of structural fire engineering design of buildings in New Zealand is about 2-3 decades away when compared to earthquake engineering, this has contributed to the poor implementation of a detailed fire strategy to building designs. This presentation is aimed at tackling some of the common misconceptions by structural engineers and the best way to implement first principles fire strategy to the design of buildings.

Biography

Dr Kingsley Ukanwa, completed his doctoral degree at the University of Auckland in a research field that is inter-woven between structural and fire engineering. He developed a simple design procedure to calculate the axial capacity of concrete-filled steel tubular columns in fire and proposed recommendations to the AS/NZS 2327 composite standards committee during the time the code was being written. During his studies, he worked as a fire consulting engineer having had a previous background only in structural engineering. He is currently a structural engineer with the Aurecon's built environment team and a committee member of Auckland Structural Group.
